Sandy Treadwell served as New York Secretary of State from 1995-2001, leading the reorganization and revitalization of the state’s oldest agency. Under Treadwell the Department of State provided more services and improved efficiency while holding the line on government growth.

In March of 2001, after 15 years of leadership and service in grassroots Republican politics, Treadwell was elected Chairman of the New York Republican State Committee. He served as Chairman until November 2004 when he was elected to represent the Empire State as a member of the Republican National Committee. Some highlights of Treadwell’s tenure as Chairman of New York’s Republican Party include:

  • The election of a Republican Mayor of New York City for a third consecutive term;
  • The historic landslide reelection of Governor George Pataki in 2002, fueled by a grassroots effort that recruited over 11,000 volunteers across New York State;
  • Successfully hosted the widely-acclaimed 2004 Republican National Convention.

In 2006, Sandy Treadwell led the effort to form the Lake Placid Regional Winter Sports Committee and was elected its President. The committee’s mission is to work with the NYS Olympic Regional Development Authority to promote winter sports and tourism and to bring the Winter Olympic Games back to the Lake Placid region for an unprecedented third time.

Treadwell also serves as Vice President of the Clark Foundation, one of the largest charitable foundations in the United States, dedicated to helping organizations whose focus is on education, employment training, and management training for nonprofit entities. A former reporter for Sports Illustrated and avid runner, Treadwell is the author of The World of Marathons, a book describing 26 epic running races on six continents.

Sandy and his wife Libby, also a former Sports Illustrated reporter, were married in 1970. They live in the Adirondacks and have two children, Carrie and Zach, and 5 grandchildren.
